What is the difference between chinese tibetan mastiffs and american?

Like many of the working or functional breeds, people select for calm even temperment pets. Better for family dogs, but loose some functionality toward their origional purpose. Also have less hair. This characteristic could be because of environment, or genetics of imported stock.
