How come so many languages use the same basic vowels?

I mean, why do so many languages use A, E, I, O, and U? we have English, Japanese, Sanskrit, Tibetan, the list can go on for quite a ways! I dont understand why this is so. is it just me that wonders these things at 1am? I'm so confused!!!!
