If mathmeticians are so intelligent why can't they make real life connections?

I noticed beyond number processing they seem to lack a fair amount of logic. Like finding relationships between one concept and another if it doesn't involve a mathematical solution. The more abstract the concept the fuzzier it gets for them. The conclusions they do come up with have nothing to do with either concept. How does that equate to being intelligent? I
